Section 01

Key Terms

Cultural Context — The customs, values, social structures, and daily realities of the original audience — the world they took for granted.
Historical Background — The events, political situations, and circumstances surrounding a biblical text — what was happening when it was written.
Anachronism — The mistake of reading modern ideas, values, or situations back into an ancient text — treating the Bible as if it was written yesterday.
Section 02

Key Concepts

01For vs. To

The Bible was written for us but not to us.

Every word is for our benefit. But the original audience was ancient. Honor that, and the text opens up.

02Background

Cultural and historical background unlocks meaning.

A verse about head coverings or food laws or temple courts makes little sense without the world behind it.

03Humility

Avoid anachronism.

Don't read modern assumptions (individualism, democracy, romance) into an ancient text that never asked those questions.
